Week Nine: Find a Need and Fill It

Saving more, giving more, and spending less has been our goal this and every quarter. This week I chose a "timely and trendy tip" first quipped by a famous Iowan, Ruth Peale. The wife of Norman Vincent Peale, renown author and preacher, she, a pastor's wife and author (and co-founder of Guideposts Magazine) impacted the nation for half of the 20th century. (I encourage you to read about her by clicking on her name.)

She is a woman who, during wars and recessions, rallied others to complain less, want less, and give more of his or her time and money to those with great needs.

Ruth lived to the age of 101 and her bio said, "She believed that prayer was key to solving any problem. A major philosophy of her life was “Find a need and fill it.”"

Girls we have our mandate. The world needs more Ruth Peale's! Lets make a difference with our lives for half of a century, eh?

You are loved,

Becky

  1. Becky,Happy Spiritual Birthday today :-) have fun golfing! Thank you for your burning hearts ministry. I have had 2 kids graduate from college, and have a senior away at college and a freshman who just started college TODAY! It is encouraging to me that you are willing to do your ministry with little support. College students desperately need that help, whether at a public or private christian school. I wish i could have seen the look on that little girls face when God supplied her support to be on campus crusade through your gift.I have read that depressed people can be helped by having them do something to help someone else.
p.s. I like it when we stay online for a few minutes after chatting. Thanks for remembering that awesome verse.

  5. That's my delete up there.
Could sure use some prayer here.
I know what my talents and Spiritual gifts are,and I do keep trying to fill the needs with what I know how to do, and feel called to do but....long story short, my attempts to plug in are constantly being rejected (even when I have covered things in prayer, and God has not said 'no' and I have the full support of my husband and family.)

  6. I will pray for you right now, but I had a thought...what about students? Is there anything you can/like to do with students? Homeless centers often need volunteers...perhaps I should ask, do you need a job or are you looking for a career move?

  7. Becky, thanks for prayers.
I have to attend a meeting about this next week, expressing where I would like to serve.
The problem is, I already did this two years ago. This is church related, as I am self employed and have to keep working at our small businesses in order to pay the bills.
My career is bookkeeper by default, and bill juggling I think! God knows the need, and I greatly appreciate prayers from you all.

  8. Laura, try to meet personally with the Pastor if things don't go well at the meeting you attend. Sometimes there are personality problems between the person choosing the ministry they want to get involved with and the person who makes that placement decision. If the church ministry does not work out I like Becky's idea of an out of church volunteer idea. Maybe you are gettting "pushed out the door" to a new ministry outside the church. Crisis pregnancy centers usually always need volunteers. The salvation army and homeless centers are other ideas. Let us know how the meeting goes!

  9. How I have missed participating in this group for the last few weeks! Becky, your newest book arrived earlier this week, and I can't wait to settle down with it.

My school schedule is packed this year, and I am taking some college classes, tool. Our students have been back for only a week, but so far I seem to have some wonderful kids on the newspaper and yearbook staffs, some very eager journalism students, and quite a variety of personalities in the English 12 Honors classes.

Perhaps more now than ever before, schools need teachers who are willing to serve, not merely lead discussions and grade papers. It is a demanding job, but I want this year to be one in which I truly seek to meet the needs of my students. To do so, I know I need to get enough sleep, exercise more than I have these last few weeks, and continue eating well. I also need to make sure I'm up and functional in time to get my "marching orders for the day," as Becky calls them. Starting each day in God's word is the best way of all to start!

I am praying for the needs of the members in this group, and I hope that you will remember me as I juggle all the responsibilities I described above.

Hope everyone has a blessed week!

  13. One meeting down, new pokers in the fire.
Still unsure what God wants, but may have more answers next week.
In the nick of time, I received an Amazon gift certificate and was able to purchase "The Rest of God." It was due here next Tuesday according to them, but I see that it will now be here tomorrow.
God must be trying to tell me something.
    Thanks for praying.
