Week Nine: Find a Need and Fill It
Saving more, giving more, and spending less has been our goal this and every quarter. This week I chose a "timely and trendy tip" first quipped by a famous Iowan, Ruth Peale. The wife of Norman Vincent Peale, renown author and preacher, she, a pastor's wife and author (and co-founder of Guideposts Magazine) impacted the nation for half of the 20th century. (I encourage you to read about her by clicking on her name.)
She is a woman who, during wars and recessions, rallied others to complain less, want less, and give more of his or her time and money to those with great needs.
Ruth lived to the age of 101 and her bio said, "She believed that prayer was key to solving any problem. A major philosophy of her life was “Find a need and fill it.”"
Girls we have our mandate. The world needs more Ruth Peale's! Lets make a difference with our lives for half of a century, eh?

Week Eight: HOPE--Hold On Pray Expectantly

Many years ago, a pastor "etched" something in my mind by using an acronym for hope: Hold On Pray Expectantly! I've never forgotten the saying or what it conveys. Prayer is God's method of touching us, holding onto us and letting us hold onto Him.
I don't know if what I'm about to tell you will encourage or discourage you, but here it is anyway.
Almost every day, there comes a moment of anxiousness or anger or fear that overwhelms me. I must get a grip--not on my reality, but on my God. I must physically take hold of Him and let Him take hold of me. This can, does, and will always happen when I pray. Whether it happens during my daily quiet time, while working with staff in my office, or when I'm at home and can kneel by my bedside, prayer connects me with God and His power. You see, I need God's power to fight for me, to "snap me out" of my pity parties, or remind who is in control of EVERYTHING. So, even though I've known God a long time (33 years on 8/26/09), not a day goes by when I don't ask Him to come alongside of me and invade my life. I need Him to correct my thoughts, direct my finances, guide my decisions, and improve my relationships.
What I'm suggesting to you is this: You never get too old, too mature, too strong, too empowered to live your life without conversing with God. He has the answers. He knows your every hope and dream, fear and failure. Get connected and stay connected to God. And when you need HOPE on any given day, hold on and pray expectantly.
Be encouraged,
Becky
By the way, my new book, Let God Talk to You, ships this Friday! Woo hoo!

Week Seven: A Stitch in Time...
I did little research on this phrase and found this from a blogger, Angela Russell, who wrote:
"The first instance of the phrase, "a stitch in time saves nine" appeared in 1732. It was printed in a book called Gnomologia, by Thomas Fuller (an English churchman). It is unknown if he coined the phrase, or simply used a proverb popular during the time. In the 1800's Louisa May Alcott (author of Little Women) brought the phrase back into popularity in a short story she wrote entitled Kitty's Day Class. The many interpretations of the phrase, "A stitch in time saves nine," are all very similar. Regardless of the interpretation, you prefer, in the end, the meaning is the same...DO NOT PROCRASTINATE. Complete the work you have in a timely manner, otherwise it will become a bigger job than it needed to be."
This is a good word for us, isn't it? (Not that too many of us do hand stitching anymore, but you get the idea.) God likes the idea too! Proverbs 21:5 (8/12/09 CYL DB) says, "Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty."
This week, in your journal, meditate on this Proverb. Ask yourself, "What will it take for me to plan my time better or wiser? A new (more detailed/more white space per day ) calendar, brighter sticky notes in more prominent places, an accountability partner who follows up with me, or an alarm or "ringer" system? This week, your assignment is to go on a field trip to a stationery or office store and check out the variety systems that can help you manage your time with new effectiveness. Okay?
Be encouraged (to save money, calories, and time),

Week Six: Don't Drink Calories
As we revisit the "saving calories" theme this week, I'm suggesting that you try incorporating one of my personal mottos into your life. Yes, I do mean to suggest that not drinking calories is one VERY effective way to maintain weight loss for a lifetime.
Last September, I not only quit drinking calories, but I even quit drinking calorie-free diet sodas (because they contained unhealthy chemicals) and I quit ALL bubbly waters because they are proven to bloat the belly. Prior to September, I would rarely drink any calories--meaning...no smoothies, no shakes, no coffees with calories...none, nada.
Here's my reasoning. As a busy 54 year old, it is difficult for me to get out and exercise, other than walking and weight lifting--therefore, I won't/don't burn very many calories each week through exercise. That means I have to carefully watch my caloric intake--about 1600 to 2000 calories a day. I PREFER to eat those calories--nuts and seeds and avocados and milk (I consider milk an essential protein for my aging body)!
So give it a try. Only eat calories. When "out", drink water with lime or lemon. At home, fill a pitcher of water with lemons, mint, cucumber and ginger (called Sassy Water in the Flat Belly Diet) and drink of it endlessly. It is refreshing and tasty. As for coffees and teas...add some of your daily portion of skim milk (perhaps only 20 calories per cup of coffee and an important protein for your bones) and stevia ( a chemical free sugar substitute) to sweeten.
You can do it!
