Week Five: Waste Not, Want Not

This week is about SAVING MONEY. So we're going to use this timely/trendy tip to revisit the idea of "shopping your closet!" In previous series, I've had you "get into" your closet and toss old, unwearable items out, gather out-dated or wrong-sized clothing and put it in a goodwill bag (which you put directly into the trunk of your car), and wash or dry clean any clothes that might need refreshing. Eliminate, then concentrate.

After this exercise, what is left? Do you need a few "pieces" to update your wardrobe? Do you (really) need another pair of black shoes--or can you take a few pair to the shoe repair store and refurbish them for one more season? Interestingly, this week, I received a pink satin "shoe bag" from a church as a gift to me...with a request from them to send them any shoes that might benefit their thrift store--outfitting women who can't afford work clothes. What a wonderful idea!

If you are like me, you have TOO many clothes--perhaps even some that you've never worn that are hanging in your closet, still bearing a price tag!

This week, EACH day, take 5 minutes--that's all--in your closet. Put the Goodwill bag/box on the floor and get started. Allow this concept (of reusing, refurbishing, redistributing) your nice, but no longer of use for you, apparel to filter into other areas of your life: impulsive purchases at store counters, another lip gloss--really?, paying for bottled water instead of asking for a cup of water, etc.

Waste not, want not...perhaps the real focus is retooling our "wanter?"

Be encouraged!

Week Four: Just Do It!

This week we are pulling each of the previous three weeks together with a favorite slogan, "Just Do IT!" So often, I think I should write a book titled, "Just Make Yourself!" (Someday, I might!)

But for our purpose, my goal is to give those of you who might need a push or pinch or a pat a reminder that YOU have to do "it!" What is "it" in your life? Thinking back over our series, we've been trying to save money, calories and time. This week, journal (or answer the following questions) about:

What is left undone that I need to be complete?
Who needs something I have that I don't use anymore?
Where can I save money this week, today, NOW?
What have I put off or procrastinated doing that I must JUST DO?

Take a look at I Chronicles 28:9, 20.

And as always...

Week Three: The Early Bird gets the Worm!

What would it mean for you to be early in all that you do? Early to meet deadlines. Early to church. Early to meetings (prayer meetings, business meetings, etc.). Early to attend a sports event. Early to work. Early to bed.

The dictionary says that early means "before the usual or expected time." The Bible says that Jesus got up early to pray. This, I believe, was a secret to his life on earth. Jesus would face more difficulty, more confusion, more demands on his time or energy than anyone, and yet He made 'time' to get alone and away with God early in the day.

Might I be so bold to say that if/as we make our time alone with God the one appointment, the one hour of our day in which we are early--coming to Him with an attitude of expectancy--we will (1) get our marching orders for the day, (2) be comforted in our present trials, and (3) be more inclined to hear His voice all through the day.

This week be early for the Lord. Be willing for Him to change your mind and heart about how you approach the spending of the precious commodity called time. Record in your journal what God says to you about being early for Him and others!

Be encouraged,

Becky

Week Two: You are what you eat!

This week is about saving calories--and I'm going to ask you to keep a food log for one week (in your journal) or for at least 3 days!

Assignment:

Day 1: Write down EVERYTHING you eat
Day 2: Write down EVERYTHING you eat and WHY you ate it! (hungry, bored, nervous, sad, etc.)
Day 3: Write down EVERYTHING you eat and HOW it made you feel (full, sadder, etc.)

During the rest of the week, journal about the types of foods you eat (healthy or unhealthy, organic, etc.), how often you eat (3 meals, plus snacks, grazing all day, no breakfast, handfuls of chips spontaneously, etc.), and what food means to you.

One of the goals of this week is to see the theme of the "You are what you eat" as a commentary on how you and I think and feel about food. If it is more than fuel, we will fall into a pattern of eating for other reasons and find ourselves eating more than the 2000 or fewer calories a day that are advised for sustaining a healthy weight. Though this isn't a course on healthy eating, there are so many online resources available to educate us on the right foods to eat, that I encourage you (like last week) to do a little research for "extra credit."

Be encouraged,

Becky
